A villain has magically isolated the town of Skara Brae, and you are a bad of adventurers attempting to lift his spell. The upshot of this narrative choice is that you have a town (the streets of which are still dangerous) for the overworld, and dungeons and such you can venture into. Controls are mainly by the arrow keys and various letter keys (for example "C" to Create a Character) which can make the interface a bit confusing at times. Random combats are real-time based, so you may want to adjust the speed settings on the emulator.

The game itself has an option for Japanese or English text and the beginning, and was originally released on the Apple II in 1985; the PC-98 version is a rather improved graphical update to that. The game would ultimately be the first in a trilogy of Bard's Tale games.
